THX Sound Design with Eurorack
"THX Deep Note " is the resonant chord that plays at the start of any THX Certified performance. The THX Deep Note was composed by Lucasfilm sound engineer Dr. James ‘Andy’ Moorer and was screened at the beginning of the 1983 premiere of Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. It remains one of the most recognizable sonic identities in the world.
The iconic sound of the THX "Deep Note" is recreated by layering 30 sawtooth waveforms generated by a Eurorack system. Each waveform is set within a frequency range of 200-400 Hz, with the final sound converging on an E♭. Automation should be pre-programmed according to the timeline of the original composition, ensuring the gradual evolution of pitch and texture. The process involves recording 30 individual layers, with each pass having slight pitch variations to replicate the complex harmonic buildup of the original.
